Chapter 3 Pt. 3
"We will be at last known rift co-ordinants in thirty seconds." Mike
said, gazing nervously into his scanner.
"Jesus, I hope this works." Art murmured, fine tuning their course.
I entered the Auxiliary Bridge and squeezed into the captain's seat.
"Well?"
"We're here. Intersect in twenty seconds."
I poked the now familiar com button on the armrest.
"Attention. We're about twenty seconds away from entering a spatial
rift in the Delta Triangle. Everybody brace yourselves, we don't know what's
going to happen. Caine out."
"At coordinates.............now."
A hazy glow formed about the exterior of the Enterprise as she winked
out of real space. Inside the ship, vibration shuddered the whole bridge and
the crew was disoriented by what seemed like mass vertigo. I remembered the
same thing happening in the animated episode.
"Oh Jesus, I think I'm gonna hurl." Art gulped, covering his mouth with
one hand.
"Hold on, the effect can't last too much longer." I said, gripping the
arms of my chair tightly, trying to prevent my own stomach from coming out my
ears.
"Ummmmmmph! Trash can! Trash can!" Mike gagged, rolling out of his seat
and onto the floor.
As suddenly as it started, the phenomenon stopped. I closed my eyes
and swallowed repeatedly, trying to calm my upset stomach.
"Okay. Are we there yet?" Layla asked, slumped weakly in her own seat.
The main viewscreen was a panorama of ships. It was one thing to see
such a graveyard depicted as a cartoon. It was another entirely to see it in
real life. I leaned forward, forgetting about my stomach problems and looked at
the vast array of ships spread out before us. It was incredible.
"Mike," I whispered," Scan for any source of power besides us. That
will be the Elysian seat of power."
The quasi Vulcan climbed unsteadily back into his seat, looking a
distinctive shade of green.
"Workin on it."
I punched up engineering.
"McCallister here. Fun ride, eh Jim?"
"Oh yeah. A regular roller coaster of laughs. How's everything down
there?"
"I was just getting ready to ask the computer that myself."
"Pay special attention to any indication of further dilithium crystal
degradation. The Enterprise had a big problem with that last time she was
here."
"Hold on..............uh, not only do we show no
degredation..........you're not gonna believe this, I think the crystals are
re-knitting themselves."
"They're not supposed to be able to do that?" I asked.
"Uh, not as far as I know." the engineer replied, sounding confused.
"Get Emilio down here, wherever he is. He specialized in nuclear engineering.
Maybe he'll have a better idea than me."
"You got it." I switched to all-call. "Emillio, report to McCallister
in Warp Engineering."
I turned my gaze back to the main screen. The number and design of the
different starships was staggering.
"Jim, I got those power readings you were looking for." Mike said,
tuning in his scanner.
"Art, take us to those coordinates. Ahead, one-quarter impulse."
"Ahead, one-quarter impulse."
The Enterprise moved forward, slipping between the dead ships, heading
towards Elysia.
